Sink Maintenance

It is important to take good care of your sink drains in order to prevent inconvenient clogs. Certain drains in your home are used for hair washing, and are easily clogged. It is recommended that you use a metal or plastic drain screen or hair catcher to trap hair before it gets washed into the drain.

If grease builds up in your drain, you can remove it by dissolving one pound of washing soda in 3 gallons of boiling water, and pour it directly down the drain. If grease build up is heavy, use a commercial drain opener. Never pour grease down the drain. A safer method for disposing of old cooking grease is to pour it into an old tin can or a jar and place it in the refrigerator until solidified and then throw it out with your household garbage.

Use of a commercial drain cleaner as a preventive measure is a good idea. Periodically, to avoid nasty clogs, use a drain cleaner, but make sure you follow the manufacturer’s directions closely. Drain cleaners are highly caustic by nature, and cause damage to your skin or eyes if used improperly.
