Squeaky Stairs

Most staircase squeaks result from a tread rubbing against the top or bottom of a riser or a stringer. To locate the problem, rock back and forth on each tread. If the tread moves, it's time for you to take corrective action. Work from below if you have access to the underside of the staircase. Otherwise, you'll have to attack the situation from above. A few well-placed nails, screws, or hardwood wedges should solve the squeaking problems.
If more than a handful of treads squeak, you may have a structural problem. Go under the stairway and check for a cracked or detached stringer. To correct major problems, call maintenance online.
